African Burial Ground
[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”small” position=”left” down=”34″ up=”7″][vc_column_text]New York’s African Burial Ground is the final resting place of approximately 15,000 free and enslaved Africans and has been called one of the most important archaeological finds of our time. Dating from the 1690s until 1794, these free and enslaved Africans were buried in 6.6-acre burial ground in Lower Manhattan. Lost to history due to landfill and development, the grounds were rediscovered in 1991 as a consequence of the planned construction of a Federal office building. Apollo Theater Tour

Guests on this tour learn about the origins of the building as well as the birth of “Amateur Night at the Apollo” – a talent competition that can be considered America’s very first American Idol competition, having launched the careers of artists such as Billie Holiday, Michael Jackson, and Lauryn Hill.
Participants see various aspects of the theater’s facilities including the backstage area where performers such as Bono, Snoop Dogg, and officials like President Barack Obama have signed the infamous, “Wall”. DJ Bus Tour

DJ Scratch Lesson

This fun and educational activity teaches guests the art of “turntablism”. Turntablism, or deejaying, is one of the four classic elements of hip-hop. It was invented in the early 1970s by three hip-hop pioneers DJ Kool Herc, Grand Wizard Theodore and Grandmaster Flash who experimented with playing the break beats or instrumental portions of popular disco songs. By playing two record players or turntables simultaneously, and moving or “scratching” the records back and forth, the break beats of each song could be extended indefinitely, allowing party-goers to dance to the percussion-heavy instrumental segments of a song for extended periods of time.

Entrepreneurship Workshop

Guests on this tour will learn about the early days of HOT 97 and the marketing, advertising, sales and promotion functions that are key to the business of radio.
